Marlene Strehler-Schaaf completes doctorate
On 07 July 2025, Marlene Strehler-Schaaf, former Junior Fellow of the Gutenberg Academy Fellows Program, successfully completed her doctoral dissertation entitled Protests for newspapers, TV and Insta? How protest movements assess the importance of public communication and (do not) adapt to perceived media logics” defended. The work is dedicated to the relationship of protest movements to journalistic and social media and aims to systematically explore the strategic considerations of activists in dealing with media, how and why they (do not) adapt to perceived media logics. The theoretical framework of the work combines the perspective of medialization research with the concept of lay theories in an innovative way. The empirical basis is formed by guided interviews with 38 activists from a broad spectrum of protest movements. This sets the work apart from previous research in many respects. Despite the rich tradition of this field of research, there are hardly any programs of study that go beyond individual case studies, that look at journalistic and social items at the same time, and that bring to light empirical findings on the orientation towards (perceived) media logics. The thesis was evaluated as “summa cum laude” overall. We congratulate her warmly!

Network meeting: Tour of SCHOTT AG
On June 30, 2025, our GAFP network meeting took place, bringing together Junior and Senior Fellows from different years. Despite the hot weather, our members made their way to the factory halls of SCHOTT AG. An international technology group that is primarily known for the production of specialty glass and glass ceramics and is one of the largest employers in Rhenish Hesse and Mainz. From raw material preparation, melting and molding to cooling – our members were given an exclusive insight into the production of Robax. The subsequent tour of the exhibition also provided an overview of the Group’s history and its innovations. Cold drinks, Spundekäs cheese and pretzels were followed by an opportunity to meet and chat in “Das Nest”. We would like to thank SCHOTT AG, especially Timo Weil, Head of Process Optimization & Projects at SCHOTT, and our former Junior Fellow Dr. Sebastian Leukel, Principal Expert Glass Development at SCHOTT, for making this day possible. >> To the picture gallery
