Marlene Strehler-Schaaf completes doctorate

On 07 July 2025, Marlene Strehler-Schaaf, former Junior Fellow of the Gutenberg Academy Fellows Program, successfully completed her doctoral dissertation entitled Protests for newspapers, TV and Insta? How protest movements assess the importance of public communication and (do not) adapt to perceived media logics” defended. The work is dedicated to the relationship of protest movements to journalistic and social media and aims to systematically explore the strategic considerations of activists in dealing with media, how and why they (do not) adapt to perceived media logics. The theoretical framework of the work combines the perspective of medialization research with the concept of lay theories in an innovative way. The empirical basis is formed by guided interviews with 38 activists from a broad spectrum of protest movements. This sets the work apart from previous research in many respects. Despite the rich tradition of this field of research, there are hardly any programs of study that go beyond individual case studies, that look at journalistic and social items at the same time, and that bring to light empirical findings on the orientation towards (perceived) media logics. The thesis was evaluated as “summa cum laude” overall. We congratulate her warmly!

Visit to the Friday Conference in Germersheim – an unforgettable event!

Last Friday, 29.06.2018, members of the Gutenberg Academy visited the Faculty 06 – Applied Linguistics and Cultural Studies in Germersheim. At the beginning, the alderman of the city of Germersheim, Dr. Sascha Hofmann, gave the participants a tour of the university building and insights into its history. Afterwards, University Professor Dr. Silvia Hansen-Schirra (Deputy Speaker of the Gutenberg Academy) presented current and future research areas of the faculty in her laboratory.

The highlight of the excursion, however, was the weekly Friday conference of Faculty 06, at which our Senior Fellow, University Professor Dr. Concettina Sfienti (pictured above, right), gave a lecture on experimental physics entitled “50 sfumature di materia grigia” in Italian. She managed to arouse the participants’ interest in physics without assuming any prior knowledge of the subject.

Meanwhile, students of the faculty simultaneously interpreted her presentation into seven different spokespersons (see picture below), so that the participants of the conference were offered an incomparable spectacle of translation via headphones!

Once again, we would like to thank the employees of the faculty and, of course, Professor Dr. Sfienti for this unforgettable event!

Career Perspectives for Postdocs
The Career Perspectives for Postdoctoral Researchers project, which is designed in close cooperation with the Center for Quality Assurance, the Office for the Advancement of Women and Gender Equality, the Career Service and many other partners, supports postdoctoral researchers who are dealing with questions such as: Where should your journey take you? and How do you arrive at a strategic career plan? There will already be two offers in spring 2017:
On 13.02. and 14.02.2017 in collaboration with Dr. Matthias Merkelbach, ImpulsPlus, the workshop “Shaping your own future. Career planning for postdoctoral researchers”. Here, postdocs are challenged and supported in their strategic career planning. On 03.04 and 04.04.2017, a second workshop with Dr. Matthias Merkelbach, ImpulsPlus, will be offered on the topic of “Targeted application, systematic success in the application process”. Postdocs are thus adequately prepared and, with an appropriate CV, are in a position to apply for jobs outside academia, for example in the education sector, at public institutions or in industry.
Video on mentoring for early career researchers
The video “Promotion of young researchers at JGU”, commissioned by the Gutenberg Graduate School, illustrates the benefits of mentoring as a funding instrument using the example of a mentoring duo from the humanities and social sciences. Mentoring programs accompany young talents on their career path by offering them professional orientation and supporting their personal development. In addition to a wide range of programs for students, JGU also offers attractive support for doctoral candidates and post-docs in the various faculties.

Study trip to Geneva for the Junior Fellows of the Gutenberg Academy

Nine Junior Fellows of the Gutenberg Academy set off on a four-day study trip to the Swiss city of Geneva on October 13. The doctoral candidates and artistic members of the Academy visited the headquarters of the United Nations in Geneva, the nuclear research facility CERN and the University of Geneva, among other places, and engaged in on-site exchanges with young scientists.

At the headquarters of the United Nations, the participants of the study trip visited the Palais des Nations in particular. At CERN, following the presentation of various experiments, the Junior Fellows learned about the ATLAS Control Room and the activities of the Mainz work groups at the nuclear research center. The travelers’ program also included a visit to the Museum of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent, which has an exhibition on the history of these two important institutions. A joint bike tour around Lake Geneva rounded off the group’s trip.

The Junior Fellows returned from their study trip on October 16 and reported on their impressions to the Academy’s Senior Fellows in the following weeks.

Event on 21.10.2016 in cooperation with GYR “Must-have mentoring?”
Mentoring programs have become firmly established in academia as an instrument for the promotion of young researchers and Human Resources Development – especially for women. While the benefits of mentoring for the recipients manifest themselves directly in the personal and professional development of the mentees, the added value of mentoring programs for the higher education institutions, companies and institutes offering them is less obvious. For higher education institutions in particular, the question arises as to how sensible it is to invest in the grant of individual junior staff when they leave the institution after completing their qualification phase. Does this mean that Human Resources Development is being carried out for the competition or is mentoring a Human Resources Development instrument that can demonstrate strategic added value for the institutions themselves beyond the individual benefit of individuals? With these questions in mind, the Gutenberg Council for Young Researchers (GYR) is hosting an event on 21 October 2016 that will shed light on mentoring as a strategic staff and organizational development tool. In this context, the added value for mentors is also discussed, as they contribute their knowledge, skills and networks to the mentoring relationship – often free of charge.

Will everyone have to study in the future?” proved to be very interesting. Among other things, the following questions were the subject of lively discussion: Can the trend towards an “academic society” be empirically proven at all? What challenges does the rising number of students pose for higher education institutions? What are the labor market policy consequences of an increase in university graduates? What does this development mean for the training professions? What opportunities does academization offer society?
